The Garden As Healer

By Gwen Stewart The word for paradise comes from the Persian word for a garden and has always meant the same thing in every culture. It is representative of paradise on earth and is our opportunity to own a little bit of heaven here and now. It has a restorative significance as a healer when we understand that gardens provide us with a place of sanctuary and well-being. The garden has the potential to provide a place of refuge from stress, the health epidemic of the 21st century according to The World Health Organization. Medical doctors suggest that stress resulting in illness is the causative factor underlying 70% of all visits to the family doctor. The ability of the garden to provide this place of healing and peace becomes crucial as more and more people succumb to this dis-ease of modern day life. It matters little whether an indoor garden is a few pots on a windowsill or a lush garden room, what does matter is that plants add a dimension to the home/and or workplace that literally changes the energy and adds life. There is something about caring for plants and tending to them whether watering, re-potting, or touching the leaves that re-connects us on a deep level with an overwhelming sense of awe about this miracle of life of which we are an integral part. As we plant the seed or see the cyclical nature of the gardens we nurture, time stands still, and we bask in the knowledge of our relationship to the earth, and to the spiritual aspect of ourselves. Reasons for creating an indoor garden include: corners in rooms and on furniture are softened when plants are introduced and placed in these areas; living plants create feelings of calm and well-being; starting seeds indoors provides a jump-start on spring for those of us who get twitchy fingers in January and allows us to grow different types of plants not usually available from greenhouses; growing herbs indoors facilitates our ability to cook with fresh herbs all year round; teaching children to garden provides an opportunity for the healing aspects of gardening to become a life-long aspect of their lives; indoor gardening is a stress-management tool taught in various classes related to providing a higher quality of life for people dealing with loss through death, divorce, or trauma in their lives. Steps to Creating your Indoor Garden 1. Purpose what do you want to achieve healing, meditation, growing herbs for cooking, or a project with the children? 2. Space how much space is available a closet, basement room, living room, corner of the bedroom, windowsill? 3. Seating is there room in your space for a seating area? 4. Characteristics create a specific type of garden such as a collection of Ficus, orchids, herbs, or ferns. 5. Features include water features such as fountains, art, sentimental objects, wind chimes, aroma and/or colour therapy, candles, and /or music. 6. Location is the location conducive to gardening indoors? 7. Light is the light adequate or will you need artificial lights? 8. Plants what plants will you grow? Indoor gardens can include anything from a tabletop garden, herb garden, healing garden, meditation garden, container garden, water garden, or wildlife garden. Thomas Moore wrote, We may have to learn again the mystery of the garden: how its external characteristics model the heart itself, and how the soul is a garden enclosed, our own perpetual paradise where we can be refreshed and restored. In other words, the indoor garden can provide a place of sanctuary where we can take a moment and re-connect with our own sacredness. Seven Tips for Giving Best Man Speeches

By Antoinette Boulay Best man speeches are a very important part of a wedding. The best man usually gives a toast at the start of the reception to honor the bride and the groom. Many best men stress out a great deal about writing the toast while others simply rely on their instincts and speak from the heart on the day of the wedding. In either approach best man speeches are often difficult to compose which is why many best men find the situation to be so stressful. This article will provide tips for giving a memorable toast at a wedding. 1. First of all best man speeches should be written a few weeks before the wedding day. This is important because best men who wait until the last minute may be stressed and may have difficulty writing anything. Planning ahead gives the best man time to write the speech and rewrite or edit it as needed. 2. Best man speeches should avoid embarrassing anecdotes. Although these stories are popular fodder for television and movies, most wedding toasts do not include stories of debauchery or earlier transgressions. Inclusion of crude or vulgar references in a wedding toast is considered to be in bad taste because it may be offensive to those in attendance. Weddings are usually attended by older relatives of both the bride and the groom. These relatives will not likely appreciate this type of humor. 3. Similarly best man speeches should not include inside jokes which will not be understood by the majority of guests at the wedding. Although these little jokes may be quite funny to the couple, the best man and a few guests, most guests will likely not understand the joke. This can create an awkward situation because the guests will not know why a few guests are laughing so uproariously. 4. Keeping best man speeches short and simple is also recommended. Many best men make the mistake of thinking the toast has to be long but this isnt true. Some of the most memorable toasts are quick and to the point. This is important because the guests will not become confused or lose track of the point being made by the best man. 5. Using common language is also recommended when giving best man speeches. A best man who attempts to use unfamiliar words may be uncomfortable and their discomfort will not translate well to the other guests. 6. Seeking outside advice when writing best man speeches can be very helpful. The best man may wish to recite the speech or toast for an audience before the wedding day to ensure everything comes out as he planned. Friends of the bride and groom or the parents of the couple are good resources for this practice speech. They make a good audience because they know the couple well and can provide insight into how the speech will be received. 7. The best man should also practice reciting the speech several more times before the wedding. The trial run with others is helpful but practicing in front of a mirror or a camcorder will allow the best man to determine how well the speech sounds. Best man speeches should sound natural and not over rehearsed but repeating the words out loud a few times will help the best man to deliver the toast smoothly on the day of the wedding. AIM Icons

By Daniel Wesley AIM or America Online Instant Messaging is a fast, effective and simple way to communicate on the internet. Any two people having the software can communicate instantly. Messages are relayed to and fro within a matter of microseconds. It is safe, private and highly used. But as any other software program, AIM also underwent major changes and one of the biggest and best changes to ever happen in the history of instant messaging was the introduction of AIM Icons. AIM Icons AIM Icons are small images with a maximum size of 50×50 pixels. Yet they represent a person in the virtual world. The aim Icon is symbolic of the person now. They may be the actual picture of the user or a graphical image representing the user. It may range from animated cartoons to flashy text. Many users change the AIM Icons depending on their mood. If they are having a bad day, you may clearly see it in the Aim Icon. On the other hand if they are having a great time, it reflects as well. The Origin AIM picked up the idea of incorporating icons into their program from video games. They picked up the avatar and modified it into a miniature version called the icon or the buddy icon. What this did was that it gave a new lease of life to people who were bored with mundane text. It bought about a breath of freshness into the otherwise boring text based messaging service. Now a graphical image could be sent based on the user’s personality or mood. Very soon everyone from superheroes to actors to cartoon characters started to feature in aim icons. From Austin Powers to Justin Timberlake, from name based personalized AIM Icons to messages, you can see them all in AIM. So if you still do not have an AIM Icon till now, then go ahead and get it. Aim Icons AIM icons were introduced after the Avatars gained popularity in the virtual world. Internet forums, games and many online applications were using avatars. So AIM too joined the bandwagon with a miniaturized version of the Avatar, called the AIM icon. Good Relationships Result From Smart Dating

By Melani Ward Dating is sort of a lost art. It seems that many people go out on a date with a person, decide they like them and before they know it they are a “couple”. I say play the odds. Date a lot. This may seem obvious but I often speak with clients and friends who go out with someone and then get really disappointed when it fails to work. When you think about how many different types of people there are and the mental list that we keep in our heads of certain traits and characteristics we want our partner to possess, it would be pretty shocking to find that the first guy you go out with as you embark on this new dating journey is going to be the one. Dating is hard work and while you should to be open to the possibility of finding Mr. or Mrs. Right, you also have to be open to the possibility of finding Mr. or Mrs. Wrong. Dating can give you valuable information about what you want and with each person you date, you may discover something new to add to your lists of wants and dont wants. Everyone you date is leading you closer to the relationship that may take you till death do you part but you have to approach each date positively and accept the gift of clarity it gives you. I have to admit that I did not always follow this rule and unfortunately it got me into a lot of trouble. Thinking back on some of my past relationships I was never one to say that I wanted to take things slowly. I was never that girl. For me it seemed that once there was a connection with a guy and we discovered that we liked spending time with each other, we were immediately joined at the hip. Looking back I know this was not the best approach. For example, my ex-husband and I met and immediately clicked. Before we knew it we were living together. However, we were different in so many of the ways that mattered and we really never should have been together, let alone get married. But, because we were living together and got along incredibly well, it was just too easy to stay on the train. I think there are a lot of people together by default when there really are better matches for them out there they just cut themselves off too soon. Sometimes it is difficult to decipher what is really going in a relationship. Sometimes you will meet someone and you click with them and it feels good right away. Unfortunately, sometimes people confuse clicking with someone with actually knowing them. There is this immediate sense of comfort you feel with some people and it seems as though you have known them your whole life but you still know virtually nothing about them. It puts you into a false sense of understanding and can really confuse things. So, take your time when you are dating and make sure you really know the person and know what you are getting into before you shut yourself off from every other possibility out there. You may find that you are dating someone who has a lot of the qualities you want and need in a partner but that something is not quite right about it. This time, instead of continuing to date someone because you think it is a better alternative than staying home alone, remind yourself that you deserve to have exactly what you want and though continuing to date this person may provide you temporary gratification, it is taking you further away from what you want. I remind my clients about their goals and what they are hoping to accomplish through dating. Then I ask them to reflect on what they are doing and whether or not what they are doing is bringing them closer to their goal. If the answer is no, then stop doing it. Get out there and date! How To Henna Your Hair

By Suzann Kale Although we use henna as a hair color, it has wonderful side benefits. It thickens hair, and leaves it silky and strong. But you have to buy pure henna (or henna mixed with plant extracts that are clearly labeled). And you must do a strand test first. A strand test will tell you two critical things: 1) whether you will like the final color, and 2) how long to leave the henna on to get that color. Because henna is often left on the hair for an hour or more, it would be wise to set aside a large chunk of time. Between the preparation of the henna, the strand test, the application, and the leave-in time, you might want to x out an afternoon for the project Who Can Use Henna The best heads for henna are brunettes and dark blonds. Hair that is naturally very dark will look smashing with red henna highlights. Got gray? Contrary to popular opinion, you can get good results with henna. To go brunette, choose a henna that’s been mixed with brown taken from safe plant powders like walnut, clove, and even a little Indigo. (But use common sense – if you’re allergic to walnuts or sensitive to clove, don’t use these products.) If you’d rather turn your gray hair blond, find henna that’s been mixed with rhubarb root or other natural ingredients. Henna Color Choices The reds are the most used, have the least amount of additives, and – if they are pure (read the label, research the Internet, join a henna forum) are completely safe. The browns and blonds are fun, too. Henna does not lighten hair. It won’t lift the color, like commercial dyes can do. So you must get a shade that somewhat matches your own, or is darker. Brunettes can easily go red, blonds can go brunette or red. But there’s no way a brunette can go blond. A Few Words of Caution Do not use henna over commercially colored hair. It’s safest to wait at least 2 months after a commercial dye job, before using henna. Some women have had no problems waiting only 1 month, but again, that’s what the strand test is for. About a week or so before you’re planning to henna, use a clarifying shampoo. That will help strip out the old color. Be sure you’re buying a brand of henna that does not contain metallic salts. These are extremely unhealthy. They may be labeled on the box as compound henna dye, or they may not be listed at all. How can you tell if your henna contains metallic salts if they’re not listed in the ingredients? If your strand test leaves your hair swatch brittle or dried-out, or if the color “takes” very quickly, that probably means it contains metallic salts. Don’t use it. Black henna is alright to use as long as it’s made with Indigo. Avoid PPD Black Henna, as it contains Para-Phenylenediamine – a dye – which is extremely harmful. What to Buy The safest henna is body-art quality henna. But there are also many well-known, well-used, safe and ethically labeled packaged hair hennas. Just use common sense: If there are ingredients listed that you are unfamiliar with, write them down, go home, and run them through your search engine. Henna does not have a long shelf life. Don’t buy it and then keep it around forever – it will lose its potency. You can seal it and freeze it, though, and it will last at least a year. Now for the Fun Many women consider the preparation of henna to be a ritual. The plant-based dye looks like a green powder, and has a peculiar fragrance, kind of like hay. The odor goes away in a day or so. Assuming you have a box of pure red henna, empty it into a glass or plastic bowl. If you’ve bought it in bulk, use about 1 cup. Never use metal utensils, bowls, or even hairclips when mixing and applying. Now, boil up some water. Pour the boiling water into the henna, a little at a time. Stir. Keep doing this until you get a paste consistency. Add a couple of pre-beaten eggs if you want, to keep the consistency sticky. Many women add a half cup of strong coffee to tone down the red a little. If you add coffee, use less boiling water. You don’t want the mixture to end up drippy. Put a cream or oil around your hairline to keep the henna from coloring your ears and forehead. And don’t forget the gloves (or you’ll also get red hands!). Apply the paste to clean, dry hair. If it’s your first henna treatment, saturate the hair completely. Then wrap it all up with either a plastic bag or some plastic wrap. On top of all that, you might want to wrap a towel, just so you don’t frighten the children. Some women use a heated towel. Here’s why you absolutely must have done the strand test: It’s the only way to know how long to leave the henna on your head. It could be anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours or more. When the timer rings, hit the shower. The whole process is messy, so don’t make neatness an issue or you’ll go nuts. Rinse the henna out – no need to shampoo. Finish with an organic, non-animal tested conditioner. Your color should last for 2 or 3 months, except for root growth. And you’re done. There will be a lot of clean-up involved, but you’ll have awesome, silky, strong, healthy red hair. (Or whatever color you choose.) Once you start using henna, you might find you love it so much you’ll never go back to anything else. Breast Enlargement Risks

By Eric Morris Despite the fact that breast augmentation surgery has become one of the most common and regularly done elective surgeries, there are still a number of risks involved in the procedure. Some of these risks are very minor but there are some that have very detrimental and permanent effects, which makes it very important for women to arm themselves with knowledge before going under the knife. One way that women can do so is to consult with her doctor or the surgeon she is considering to do the operation, which can be really help women get the facts with regard to the risks involved in breast augmentation surgery. In addition to this, women can also go online and research on the risks involved in this kind of surgery. Some risks involved in breast augmentation surgery There are different risks that are discussed in the literature on breast augmentation surgery and any woman who is thinking of getting her breasts done would do well to know these risks. One of the most common risks involved in this kind of surgery is that after the operation, a woman may lose some sensitivity in the breast area and also the nipple area. In addition to this, there is also a risk that during future mammograms, the view of the doctor would be obscured by the implants. In some cases, women also risk suffering from breast tissue atrophy, which is opposite to what implants are supposed to do. Some of the most serious risks include the risk of breast tissue necrosis, which can have very detrimental effects to the body. Another risk is that the body may reject the implant, which would make the body push the implant out of the skin, which can cause the skin in the breast to break. In addition to these, infections are also some of the most serious risks, as it can cause other complications. Another risk is the possibility of developing capsular contraction, wherein breast tissue squeezes the implant, which can result to a “baseball breasts” that look deformed and painful. Patio Furniture – The One-Minute Makeover For Your Backyard!

By Caroline Smith Patio furniture can make a huge difference to your enjoyment of your backyard, and well-chosen pieces can become attractive features of your garden design. There’s a massive range of outdoor patio furniture to choose from, depending on your lifestyle, your budget and the layout of your garden. For instance, if you like to entertain guests on your patio, then there are various types of dining sets available. Or for more casual relaxation, there’s a great selection of recliners and chaise lounges, just perfect for whiling away those long sunny days. When choosing items of patio furniture, it’s worth knowing a bit about the different types of materials and their features. For example, some outdoor furniture is not built to withstand adverse weather conditions and is designed to be stored inside when not in use. Lightweight aluminum, plastic and wicker furniture falls into this category, and is generally cheaper to buy than the more solid items that can be left outside year round. These types of chairs and tables require little maintenance and are easily portable. They are often designed to be folded away or stacked, to save on storage space. For long-lasting garden furniture that’s going to remain in a permanent position in your backyard, it’s best to look for heavy and durable materials, such as metal or wood. Wrought iron and cast aluminum patio furniture is very popular, as it can be crafted into all kinds of ornate designs, and comes in a choice of finishes. Aluminum is favored because it’s rust-proof, but wrought iron can be treated with a metal protector to prevent corrosion, and with regular attention can withstand many seasons of use. Alternatively, wooden items, including cedar, pine and teak outdoor furniture, can look stunning and with a bit of care can last for years. There are also some accessories that you may want to consider for your outdoor furniture. To provide protection from the elements, weather-proof patio furniture covers are ideal. These are durable vinyl or PVC coverings that can be fitted over individual items or over whole sets. They are effective at preventing wear and tear from rain, wind, snow and sunlight. A cover is also useful for keeping your chairs free from dust and insects. Other accessories include specially made patio furniture cushions, which come in all shapes and sizes. These not only provide added comfort, but can add a splash of color to your patio area. Patio furniture not only enhances the appeal of your backyard, it can provide loads of enjoyment for outdoor living for many seasons to come. Your Christian Online Dating Profile — Is It Good or Great?

By Rebekah Spicer My friend Joan came to me last month very discouraged after trying three different Christian dating websites. Although she had a number of views and several contacts, she just was not getting much interest. This puzzled me, because she is truly great looking, intelligent, a strong Christian, and has a successful career. How could men NOT be interested in someone like Joan? I asked her to show me her profiles, and after editing them and utilizing some of the secrets to a great dating profile, she had more contacts and interest than she could handle. Do YOU need help getting more online dating leads? Does your online profile need to be revamped? Here are a few tips to make your profile not just good, but great! 1. Post photos. There is nothing worse than clicking on someone’s profile and not knowing what they look like. It really is not fair to either party. And when you do post photos, make them realistic. Obviously, not photos of you when you first get up in the morning, but not “edited” glamour shots either. Just nice pictures of you looking your best. 2. Be yourself–be fun! When you describe yourself, stay away from the standard boring “young woman seeking friendship, and possibly more”. Really tell people who you are. If you’re a morning coffee person, tell them about your Starbucks cravings. If you like to jog, describe one of your afternoon runs through the park. If you like working with children, describe your responsibilities in your children’s ministry at church. If you like to write poetry, post one of your shorter poems. In other words, let your personality shine through. 3. Don’t scare potential interested parties with your profile. Yes, marriage can be your ultimate goal, but you don’t have to say : “hope to meet man for immediate marriage relationship.” Or you may love children and want them, and it’s fine to indicate that in your profile. But you might not want to say “man seeking young woman to keep house and have his children–hopefully many of them.” Granted, these are exaggerations, but you get the point! Be honest, but not scary! Finally, talk to other people who have successfully met someone online, and get their opinions of your profile. There is strength in advice. Check out great websites like www.christian-online-dating-guide.com for even more advice! Remember, your profile is only as good as you make it–make it great and get more dates! Binge Eating – How To Stop Binge Eating And Get Back In The Driver’s Seat

By Melissa McCreery, Ph.D. Binge eating is eating “gone wrong.” Binge eating is eating gone on automatic pilot, eating disconnected from physical body sensations like fullness and hunger. After a binge you may experience a glazed feeling and a “coming back to awareness.” “What happened here?” and “I wish I could undo that” are common thoughts. Mindful eating is the opposite of bingeing. Mindful eating, conscious eating, and intuitive eating are all terms to describe eating that occurs when the mind and the body are in full communication. When this process is happening, we eat in response to our body cues and our body’s needs. We eat what we are hungry for and we eat until we are full (not stuffed). We are conscious of how we are feeling while we are eating and how we are likely to feel afterwards. Conscious eating does not leave us stuffed to the gills, sick to our stomachs and collapsed on the couch, too uncomfortable to move. Conscious eating fuels us and gives us energy. The food we eat consciously gives our bodies and our minds pleasure. It is a nice experience. To stop binge eating, the first requirement is to turn off the automatic pilot and get back into the driver’s seat. This takes practice and won’t be easy the first or second time you try it. Like using a muscle though, your ability to stop a binge will grow stronger. Try these tips: Slow down. Don’t try to stop the binge at first, but communicate to yourself what you are doing. This means you are not on auto-pilot. Say to yourself out loud or in your head “I feel a binge coming on” or “Here we go” or “I’m starting to feel out of control with my eating.” Make the process conscious. Put your food on a plate. You’ve heard this before because it’s important. To be mindfully eating you need to be experiencing the food and how much of it you are choosing to eat. Practice being a nonjudgmental observer. Try to notice what both your head and your body are doing–from a curious nonjudgmental standpoint. What’s the dialogue going on in your brain? Is it silent, are you numb, are you criticizing yourself or already planning how you’ll do it differently tomorrow? Don’t try to change your thoughts, just be curious and collect data about what your mind is doing. Now put your hand on your stomach. Take a deep breath. Try to pay attention to how your body is feeling. Feel your hand on your stomach. Feel it move as you breath. Try to take note–nonjudgmentally of how your body feels. Is there tension anywhere, muscle tightness, are you holding your breath or breathing deeply? Does your stomach feel full or empty? How full? How empty? If you feel courageous, put your other hand on your heart. Feel your heart beat. Keep breathing. Ask yourself what you are REALLY hungry for. Ask yourself what you could feed your self and your spirit IN ADDITION TO food. Sit for a minute and listen. Don’t worry or be afraid if you don’t know the answer this time. It’s asking the question that is important. Afterwards, if you can do it, try to write down what you noticed about the whole experience. Work very hard not to be critical but to write from the standpoint of a curious observer. As you think about what happened, can you identify anything that brought you to that binge? What was going on before? When did you decide to do it? Can you identify how you were feeling–both in your mind (bored, lonely, happy, sad) and in your body (tired, tense, hungry)? Practice doing one small, nice, compassionate thing for your body and soul every day that has nothing to do with food. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering. Put your feet up and sit for fifteen minutes before you tackle the laundry, take a bubble bath instead of a shower, wear something that you feel lovely in, put music on that you love, kick off your shoes and wiggle your toes. Celebrate this Christmas with full zeal and in all the splendour with your family members with Christmas loans. Give them the Christmas they will remember for the rest of their lives but all at a very low cost without expensive credit cards and overdraft facility. Christmas loans are provided by lenders at very low rates of interest for the purpose of Christmas expenses like Christmas trees, gifts, vacations, cakes and clothes etc. You cannot use credit cards, over draft facilities for Christmas as the interest rates they charge are very high for these minor expenses. Moreover you have to spare the overdraft facility for a rainy day. Christmas loansare available both with and without collateral but you have to pay higher rates of interest without collateral although the property is not at risk. Even if you avail the overdraft facility you can still take a loan to meet the burden of high rates of interest. You can easily apply for these loans on Christmas Eve and get the loan.
